Lord Shiva first hid at Guptkashi but later proceeded further up and reached the valley to Kedarnath. Here the Pandavas finally got his Darshan and their wish fulfilled. Gupkashi is the place where the pandas (hereditary pilgrimage priests) of Kedarnath live during the winter when the temple is closed. Also, the Bigraha (idol) of Kedarnath passes through Guptkashi to reach Ukhimath where the idol is worshiped for six months of winter.
