At a height of 1890 meters above sea level, there are very few other places that offer the spectacular 300 km-wide panoramic view of the majestic Himalayan peaks of Trisul, Nanda Devi and Panchchuli. Dubbed as the “Switzerland of India”, Kausani is synonymous with lush green landscapes, dense coniferous trees and silent valleys which make it a very popular hill station. It is also a great weekend getaway from Delhi.

Best time to visit: April to June are the ideal months to visit Kausani. The months of December to mid February has Kausani covered with sheets of snow.

Kathgodam is well connected with major cities like Delhi, Kolkata and Lucknow. Buses as well as taxis are easily available to Kausani from both the airport as well as railway station. Kausani is well connected by road and is easily accessible from destinations like Delhi (419 km), Almora (52 km) and Nainital (117 km). Anasakti Ashram or Gandhi Ashram
This serene place is located just about a kilometer from Kausani bus stand and accessible by a small walk uphill. It has been built as a tribute to the Mahatma who visited this place for about two weeks in 1929. Impressed by the pristine beauty of Kausani, Gandhiji described it as the “Switzerland of India” and was also inspired to write his treatise “Anasakti Yoga” here.

The place now serves as a research cum study center and has a small museum that is well stocked with books and photos of Gandhiji. There are also about 24 rooms on offer for accommodation with library facility for visitors. The place is peaceful and also houses a small prayer room where prayer sessions take place each morning and evening. Lined by deodar and pine trees and weather permitting, the view of the Himalayas from the Ashram is breathtaking.

Kausani Shawl factory
The shawl factory was started in 2002 and happens to be a place where you can witness local weavers manufacture woollen shawls using traditional methods. Established to promote the traditional Kumaoni artwork, this industry now serves as a major source of employment for the local people, shepherds and weavers. Shawls and handicrafts are available in myriad colors and designs and hence make the place popular with tourists. Most shawls also have embroidery work on them. The price of the woolen shawls depends upon the type of wool used and the detail of the embroidery. It is a great place to gain an insight into the local culture, manufacturing process as well as the perfect one to pick up a souvenir or gift from the shop located above the factory.

Baijnath Temple
Less than 20 km from Kausani is the Baijnath temple complex that dates back to the 12th century and is located on the banks of the river Gomti. The place holds special religious and historical significance in that, according to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva and Parvati were married at the confluence of River Gomati and Garur Ganga.

The temple complex was built by the Katyuri kings and the temples are constructed in stone. There are idols dedicated to Lord Shiva, Ganesh, Parvati, Chandika, Kuber, Surya and Brahma. The town of Baijnath draws its name from the temple. The main temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati and is accessible from the riverside by a flight of steps made of stones. The temple is popular with locals and tourists alike and attracts great crowds on special days like Mahasivaratri. Outside the temple complex is a lake full of fish and it is a ritual for pilgrims to offer food in the form of 'channa' after they visit the temple.
